UF Photo Gallery Guidelines
These guidelines are to help users determine the proper use and legal responsibilities of the UF photo library. Routine color enhancement, cropping, exposure compensation and retouching of photographs is allowed as long as the original content and meaning are not changed. If there are any questions regarding this, please contact the photo department director Ray Carson at (352) 392-9092 or by email at rcarson@ufl.edu.
The position and appearance of people and objects in a photograph should not be changed, or manipulated. Cropping should be limited to improving composition, by removing unnecessary background elements or to meet layout requirements. Cropping should not change the content, meaning or intent of the original photograph.
If a photo is to be digitally altered to be used as part of a photo illustration or collage, permission should be received from the photo department to use the photo outside its original intent or composition. Remember, the photographer created the image and their name is on it. To change the content changes their creation. In addition, since all photographs are copyrighted by the UF News Bureau the work can not be changed without the permission of the copyright holder.
Using photos of people in any publication that endorses a product, organization or position should be avoided unless it was shot specifically for that purpose. Editorial use of photos on University publications do not require model releases, but any commercial, political or lifestyle endorsement do require the models consent. Therefore, people photos should be used on any endorsement only if permission of the subject and photographer has been obtained.
Misrepresenting a set up photo illustration as a "found" moment or as a news photo should be avoided. If a caption is necessary to explain the content isn't real or doesn't represent that actual event, then the photo should not be used.
If the photo is used as part of the illustration, the credit line should reflect this, such as: Photo Illustration by xxx Original photo by xxx.
All uses of photos by the Photography dept should be properly credited, such as: Photo by (photographers name) UF News Bureau.
Use of photographs from the UF News Bureau web library is limited to the original purchaser and can not be given to other sources to use without permission from the department.
